Every living thing experiences stress, but we humans tend to linger on these feelings, to the point where we develop both physical and mental problems. At Ditto PR, employee wellness and happiness are topics I put a lot of time into. But to truly create a positive and healthy work environment, I’m starting to look at the enemy: stress.

Work stresses people out! And we spend so much time at work that longer and higher levels of stress can lead to sickness, injury, addiction, you name it.

So, if we can reduce stress at Ditto, we can create a work environment that helps employees become healthier and more productive.

Here is a collection of quotes about the impacts stress has on work, body, and mind, that may help you the next time you find yourself trapped in negative thoughts.

More to come!

“It is not the stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it.”

— Hans Selye, endocrinologist credited with recognizing the existence of biological stress

“If you have a lot of stress, at the extreme end of the range, you become a poorer decision-maker, you have a very hard time performing tasks, and you underperform other people in cognitive and physical feats. … You can’t control outcomes. You can only control input — whether you worked as hard as you could on it, given the information available.”

— Mike Steib, CEO of XO Group

“One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from a horse master. He told me to go slow to go fast. I think that applies to everything in life. We live as though there aren’t enough hours in the day but if we do each thing calmly and carefully we will get it done quicker and with much less stress.”

— Viggo Mortensen, actor

“How we perceive a situation and how we react to it is the basis of our stress. If you focus on the negative in any situation, you can expect high stress levels. However, if you try and see the good in the situation, your stress levels will greatly diminish.”

— Catherine Pulsifer, author

“Stress primarily comes from not taking action over something that you can have control over. Stress is a warning flag. What it means is there’s something I haven’t identified that’s bothering me and haven’t taken any action on. As soon as I identify it and start addressing the issue, it dramatically reduces the stress. Stress comes from ignoring things that you shouldn’t be ignoring. Stress doesn’t come from hard work.”

— Jeff Bezos, founder and former CEO of Amazon

“Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.”

— Simon Sinek, author

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”

— William James, psychologist and philosopher
